What are the differences in various rating classes?
Life insurance policies are based on rating classes which are determined by an individual’s personal habits and health history. The requirements for each company may vary slightly by class. Here we offer some basic guidance for assisting you in determining which class you might qualify for. Remember, when it comes to life insurance and rates, all carriers are not the same. Some insurance companies have more liberal requirements than others. For example, height and weight tables can vary by company. Cholesterol requirements and other things such as certain types of tobacco usage may also be handled differently depending on the carrier. Our experience and expertise can assist in matching you with the right carrier. If you have specific questions about your potential rate class click here and send us your inquiry. We would be happy to offer our feedback, usually within an hour or two. Preferred Plus (also known as Super Preferred or Preferred Best)
This is probably the least issued class as a result of the strict qualification criteria. To qualify you may not have any history of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. You must be height and weight proportionate and not use nicotine in any form. While there are a few exceptions, usually no medication is allowed. Also a history of cancer or heart disease within your immediate family prior to age 60 can affect your ability to qualify for Preferred Plus. Your driving record is also taken into account for this class as are avocations such as Sky Diving or Mountain Climbing. Preferred
To qualify for Preferred rates, you must be height and weight proportionate. You personally should not have any history of cancer, diabetes or heart disease. Controlled high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol may be allowed if levels are normal while under treatment or medication. Your driving record will also be reviewed and excessive tickets or a DWI can preclude qualification for Preferred rates. Standard
This class may be available if you are slightly overweight, taking certain medications, have a history of controlled depression etc. This class also is more liberal for certain hazardous avocations. Tobacco Use
Some carriers are less strict for individuals that smoke cigars or chew tobacco while others consider any tobacco usage the same as cigarettes. If you smoke cigars or chew tobacco contact us and we will assist you in selecting the most competitive company. Cigarette smokers are always considered tobacco users. |
Your actual class will be determined after underwriting by your chosen carrier. These descriptions are only meant to serve as guidelines.
